Applying for and Obtaining Endorsements

The steps below outline how to apply for and obtain the K-12 Reading Endorsement and/or the TESOL Endorsement. Applicants may complete the content examinationas at any time; however, Heidelberg's School of Education will not submit the licensure application until all courses and requirements have been completed. For questions on this part of the process, please contact the School of Education at 419-448-2125.

1. Take the Required Content Examination

Beginning Sept. 1, 2013, a new test series (Ohio Assessments for Educators), replaced the Praxis II series as the required Ohio educator licensure tests. Testing will be offered on computer and will be available by appointment at test centers in Ohio and nationwide. Additional information about registration for the assessments is available on the OAE website (http://www.oh.nesinc.com/).

To determine what assessments you will need to take for licensure, please look over the  What Assessments Do I Need to Take? portion of the OAE website. Most tests are offered year round, by appointment. Please check for your test's availability here. Be sure to have your scores sent to Heidelberg University as well as the Ohio Department of Education (ODE).

NOTE: If you have already passed the PRAXIS II specialty area test, "Introduction to the Teaching of Reading (#5204 or #0204)," your scores will still be accepted by ODE. You do not have to take the new test.

The state-mandated OAE exam(s) for the Reading (PK–12) endorsement are titled Reading (Subtests I & II); for TESOL, it is 021 English to Speakers of Other Languages —Tentatively available beginning in early 2014, following State Board of Education of Ohio approval

2. Notify Heidelberg

Notify Heidelberg’s School of Education that you have completed the requirements by sending in the Endorsement Clearance Request Form.

3. Apply for Licensure

Starting January 1, 2014, all licensure applications are submitted to the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) via online, by creating a SAFE Account (shortcut to page here).

How do we set up our SAFE accounts?
To create a SAFE account, the system will ask you for date of birth and the last four numbers of your Social Security number. It also will ask for your Ohio driver’s license or a state of Ohio identification number (available from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles). Those who do not have one of these forms of identification should allow a bit more time. They will find instructions within the SAFE account creation menu about how to submit another form of identification.

Once the department validates the SAFE account, please log into the system and verify that your email address is entered correctly. To do so, click on the “change email” link at top to view this address.
