Tour of Tiffin

Last year we highlighted many of the places that make Tiffin special.  This summer we're going around again! A true college town, Tiffin has a lot to offer students and visiting families with food, entertainment, and services. Come back each week to see our next stop!  Last year's stops.

Phat CakesPhat Cakes and Cafe

Originally started as a gourmet cupcake and cake company, Phat Cakes opened a café in downtown Tiffin in 2012. They offer a complete lunch and dinner menu including paninis, wraps, salads, and soups. And you must finish your meal with a gourmet cupcake!

Phat Cakes hosts entertainment events from bands to book signings.

Distance from campus: .5 mile (9 minutes walking, 1 minute driving)

Other places to grab lunch or dinner are T J Willies, Carmies, Pioneer Mill, Denny’s, Clover Club, Madison Street Tavern, Hunan King, Rose’s, Bob Evans, Big Boy, Golden Crown, and Paulette’s.




St. Joseph Catholic Church

St. Joseph’s holds multiple masses during the week including a televised mass on Sunday mornings on a local cable channel. Their community involvement includes an annual summer festival with food, games, a 5k, and raffles.

Heidelberg has several on campus options for students. Campus Fellowship hosts a student-led Christian worship service on Monday nights, Catholic Newman Club sponsors a monthly Mass on Sunday nights, and Campus Ministry holds a weekly Christian chapel service at noon every Wednesday throughout the year.

Distance from campus: 1 mile (3 minutes driving)

Other churches in town include Saint Mary Catholic Church, Old Trinity Episcopal, Grace Baptist Church, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church, Redeemer Lutheran Church, First United Baptist Church, Church of the Nazarene, First Christian Church, St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. John’s United Church of Christ, Grace Pentecostal Church.


Heritage IGA

Only a short walk from campus, IGA is the only grocery store on the east side of town and the perfect place to head for a quick food run.

Many Heidelberg students have earned extra cash working there during the school year and its proximity to campus makes it a convenient stop for both students and faculty and staff.

Distance from campus: .3 mile (6 minutes walking)

There are plenty of places to shop for food in town including Kroger, Aldi, Molyet’s Farm Market, and Walmart.



Mohawk golf course

Mohawk Golf and Country Club

This 18 hole golf course is the home course for the Heidelberg men and women's golf teams. Mohawk is also the site for the annual Back the Berg Golf Outing fundraiser that supports all of Heidelberg athletics.

Distance from campus: 4.5 miles (8 minutes driving)

Other golf courses within 10 minutes of campus include Clinton Heights Golf Course and Seneca Hills Golf Course. Right next to campus, Hedges-Boyer Park has a disc golf course.




Shake Shak

Though known for their shakes, Shack Shak also has flurries, sundaes, and hand dipped ice cream flavors. Try shakes ranging in flavors from the traditional chocolate and peanut butter to the unique pina colada and butterscotch. Make it a meal with shredded chicken, hotdogs, mozzarella sticks, fries and more.

With a walk up window, drive-thru, and outdoor seating, you can stay awhile or head on your way.

Find your favorite ice cream treat by trying out Big Dipper, Hugo’s, Uncle Mike’s Dairy Bar, Shoey’s Cool Creations, and Jolly’s Drive-In.



Cinemark Theatre

While summer blockbusters draw huge crowds, great movies premiere all year round. The Berg Events Council (BEC) hosts $2 Tuesdays at Cinemark in Tiffin for Heidelberg students. Drive yourself or join the carpool for a fun, convenient, and affordable time at the movies. 

Early Bird (before noon) = $4.75, Matinee = $5.75, Evening (student price) = $6.25.

Distance from campus: 2.5 miles (6 minutes driving)

Students can also see movies and shows in town at the historic Ritz Theatre or the Field of Dreams Drive-In movie theater on route 53.



AJ's Heavenly PizzaAJ’s Heavenly Pizza

What’s a college town without pizza? AJ’s offers dine-in, carryout, and delivery options for their pizzas, subs, foldovers, chicken chunks and wings, salads, desserts, and breadsticks. They are home to the jumbo pizza, a 24” x 18” deep dish pan pizza. It's a perfect choice for college students on the weekends because they are open till 1am on Friday and Saturday.
