Heidelberg Strengthens Curriculum

Dec 26, 2012

HHP Professor and studentThis fall marked changes to the Health Sciences division at Heidelberg University. The old Heath and Physical Education Department received a make-over. The department has been renamed Human Performance and Sports Studies to reflect the changes made to the curriculum.

Heidelberg will now offer a Health and Human Performance Major. This major will allow students to choose between two concentrations: Exercise Science and Health and Physical Education. This major is in response to the continually growing demand for trained individuals in the industry of health, exercise and fitness. The program will provide a strong background for the varied paths students will follow.

Employment opportunities in fitness, health care and health related industries are projected to increase 25-30% over the next decade, with more than 3 out of 10 new jobs created in health care. Employment growth will be driven by an aging population and longer life expectancy.

The department still houses the Sport Management major, but made some changes to the curriculum to strengthen the program. Students choose between three concentrations: Fitness, Public Relations, and Business. A Wellness minor was added as well.

These changes to the Health Sciences division show that Heidelberg is committed to providing the best education for students by listening to their needs, offering relevant options, and striving to maintain a standard of excellence.
