Academic excellence personified: 53 seniors honored

Dr. Collar gives an awardA total of 53 of Heidelberg’s best and brightest seniors who will graduate in May, plus a few 2012 graduates, were honored for their achievements in the classroom at the annual Academic Excellence Recognition Dinner Saturday.

Each spring, students who will soon graduate from the Honors Program and students who have earned Dean’s List recognition every semester come together with their parents to celebrate their commitment to academic excellence.

For the second year, the Heidelberg University Honor Society held its annual induction ceremony at the event. The Honor Society, the only all-university scholastic honor society at Heidelberg, was created in 1933 by faculty to recognize and promote scholarship in the liberal arts.

Patterned after Phi Beta Kappa and maintained by faculty and staff who are members, the Honor Society inducts seniors with a 3.5 or better GPA, who rank in the top 15 percent of their class and who will have completed 60 credit hours by semester’s end.

Combining the Academic Excellence Recognition Dinner with the Honor Society induction aligns with the university’s goal to improve and lift up academic excellence across campus.

Following a welcome by President Rob Huntington and an invocation by senior honoree Joshua Olewiler, Provost David Weininger introduced the speaker for the evening, Dr. Susan Carty, professor of biology. Carty is the winner of the 2011-12 Ream-Paradiso Distinguished Teaching Award. Her remarks centered on her words of wisdom for the seniors around the themes of having fire in the belly, introspection and a hobby, as well as a zest for reading and laughing.

During the program, Anna Brodman, assistant director of annual giving, explained the history of the Honor Society. Dr. Vicki Ohl, associate vice president for Academic Affairs, presented the award recipients. Dr. Weininger, Dr. Douglas Collar, associate professor of English and associate dean of the Honors Program, and Peggy George, Honor Society president, handed out awards and congratulations.
